There’s something about the end of the year that naturally invites reflection. As the days slow down and the calendar begins to close, it’s often easier to notice what this year has held, both the moments we celebrated and the ones that stretched us more than we expected.
Right now, you might be feeling proud of how far you’ve come, disappointed by what didn’t happen, grateful for unexpected blessings, or simply tired and ready for the new year to start. Wherever you find yourself, this is a meaningful time to pause, reflect, and take inventory before stepping into a new year.
These journaling prompts are meant to help you look back honestly, with grace and compassion for yourself, and to recognize where God has been present throughout the year. There’s no right or wrong way to answer them. Take your time, sit with each question, and allow yourself the space to reflect without rushing.

1. What word would you use to describe this year as a whole?
If you had to sum up the year in one word, what would it be? Write it down, then take a moment to reflect on why that word stands out to you. What moments, emotions, or experiences shaped that choice?
2. What moments from this year stand out the most to you?
Think about the moments that linger in your memory, whether they were joyful, challenging, surprising, or significant in quiet ways. Write about why these moments stayed with you and what they revealed about this season of your life.
3. What were the biggest challenges you faced this year?
Be honest with yourself about the areas that felt heavy or difficult. What tested your faith, your patience, or your endurance? How did you respond in those moments, and what did you learn about yourself through them?
4. Where did you see God show up for you this year?
Reflect on both the obvious and subtle ways God met you throughout the year. This could be answered prayers, unexpected provision, moments of peace, or strength you didn’t know you had. Write about where you noticed His presence most clearly.
5. What prayers were answered this year, even if not in the way you expected?
Think back to the prayers you prayed at the beginning of the year or throughout it. Which ones were answered, and how? Were there any answers that looked different than what you had originally hoped for?
6. What did you have to let go of this year?
This could be a season, a relationship, a plan, a mindset, or an expectation. Reflect on what you released and how letting go shaped you, even if it was difficult at the time.
7. How did you grow this year, spiritually, emotionally, or mentally?
Growth isn’t always loud or obvious. Write about the ways you’ve changed, matured, or gained a new perspective. Consider how this year stretched you and what that growth has produced in you.
8. What are you most grateful for as you look back on this year?
Gratitude helps us see the year more clearly. List the people, experiences, opportunities, and small moments that brought you joy or comfort. Allow yourself to sit in thankfulness as you reflect.
9. What unfinished feelings or experiences do you want to bring closure to before the new year?
Is there anything you’re still carrying that you don’t want to take into the next season? Write honestly about what you need healing, forgiveness, or peace over as this year comes to an end.
10. What lessons from this year do you want to carry into the next one?
Reflect on the wisdom this year has given you. What truths, habits, or perspectives do you want to hold onto as you move forward?
Taking time to reflect at the end of the year can bring clarity, healing, and a deeper sense of gratitude for all that this season has held. My prayer is that these prompts help you see the year with a fresh perspective and recognize how present God has been, even in the moments that felt uncertain.
Happy journaling!!!
